iPod One and Other Follies

How must Van Morrison feel about this news?

Funny that this should appear today – I’ve been wanting to post about music. I go through ups and downs with new music. My love of all-things-indie expired a few years ago, and I increasingly find myself tuning in NPR without even giving KEXP the obligatory check-in. I think there’s a combination of things happening here – I’m aging, I’ve worked with music for many years (imagine what your taste for Krispy Kreme would be if you worked there), and music just ain’t what it used to be. Oh, and the sad fact that aging indie rock ain’t pretty.

I was ga-ga over the new Modest Mouse. That record has so many layers to discover after many listens, which is heaven for me.

Now I’m obsessed with Kings of Leon. Dirty, anthemic rock which makes me want to spill beer on my shirt as I light a cigarette. So good!

But here’s why I really babble about this today: Green Day. Have you heard American Idiot? Fellow political ramblers, I IMPLORE YOU TO GET THIS RECORD. Really. Even if you can’t stand Billie Joe’s voice, had a terrible experience with the band, or hate their trademark guitar tone, listen to the lyrics and you’ll be doing a combo fight-the-power-windmill in no time. (Note: I know that I have arrived late to this party – the record’s been out for a while.) This record is musical genius. I listened to it no less than 7 times this weekend, and found myself seeking out iPod-friendly activities. It’s a rock opera-cum-collection of liberal political fight songs.
